The thrilling potential of SixthSense technology | Pranav Mistry - YouTube
We are inherently familiar with the physical world and its objects, which we manipulate through gestures. These gestures are integral to our interaction with both the physical environment and each other. My interest lies in how we can leverage our understanding of everyday objects and gestures to enhance our digital interactions. Why not use computers as intuitively as we interact with the physical world?
Eight years ago, I began exploring this concept, starting with the rollers from a mouse. I created a $2 gesture-interface device that replicated physical movements in the digital world. This led to the idea of connecting physical sticky notes to digital information, such as SMS or calendar reminders. Another invention was a pen that could draw in three dimensions, aiding designers and architects.
I then envisioned a physical Google Map, where placing objects like a boarding pass or coffee cup could display relevant information. These explorations aimed to seamlessly connect the physical and digital worlds. However, I realized that our true interest is not in computing, but in information. Last year, I considered reversing my approach: bringing digital information into the physical world, free from the confines of screens.
To achieve this, I developed the SixthSense device, a wearable projector that augments the world with digital information. It tracks gestures and allows interaction with digital elements. You can take photos with a gesture, browse photos on any surface, and even dial phone numbers using your palm.
The device recognizes objects, providing relevant information or reviews. It offers a new way of computing that merges with our physical environment, making technology more intuitive and integrated into our lives. The goal is to bridge the digital divide and keep us connected to the physical world, preventing us from becoming slaves to machines.
In conclusion, SixthSense technology has the potential to revolutionize the way we access and interact with information, blending the digital and physical worlds in a natural, intuitive manner. Open source software will soon be available for anyone to create their own SixthSense device, democratizing this innovative technology.
